First PCL Match Vs. Saint Joe's Prep

 

 

On Friday March 21st the Archbishop Wood Vikings ventured down to 17th and Girard to take on the Hawks of Saint Joseph's Prep.  This was the first official PCL match ever played!  (Bonner-Roman got cancelled and O'Hara-LaSalle was at night).  Congratulations goes to both teams for putting out a great effort!  Wood came away with a 3-0 win over the Prep for Varsity and the JV fell 0-2.

 

JV had a very new line up with a brand new setter in Chris Montague.  We predict as he gains experience and confidence the JV team will be able to get over the edge with a win.  Both games were close and hotly contested.  A lot of our JV team is first year players that picked up the sport weeks if not days ago!

 

Varsity had a bit of a better time at the Prep besting the Hawks 3-0.  The first set saw the Vikings jump all over the Prep sending a clear message this would not be easy.  They won the set 25-13.  While Saint Joe's Student Section was out in force they were soon quited by big blocks from Joe LoStracco and a few great kills by Outside Hitter Jack Waltrich and Opposite Matt Miller. 

The second set became a bit more turbulent for Wood as they missed 7 serves and were down most of the set, even at one point being down by 8 points.  The vikings did not give up and continued to play.  Behind the serving of outside hitter Sam Thiers they were able to pull out a 25-22 win!  The this set was more of the same story with the vikings getting off to a slow start giving away 6 points to prep after some poor passing, communication issues and hitting errors.  The vikings regrouped and slowly worked their way back into the match.  Serving again was what would prove to be the demise of the Prep.  Libero Dave Lehmann went back to the line at 19-24 and served our way back to a win of 26-24!  Overall it was a very exciting match!  With some great plays and moments and some lessons on what needs to be worked on.  The Next PCL Match is Monday March 24th at Archbishop Wood HS 5:30 for JV and 7:00 Varsity!
