Today Woods made history winning it's first PCL Playoff match! This was a slug fest between the two team that went to 5 and entertained an almost sold out house! The win puts Wood into the PCL finals against La Salle who won the other semi against Cardinal O'Hara.
The first set saw the tone set for both teams as there were back and forth kills delivered. Both teams were trying to assert themselves at the net as well as on the service line. Through the middle of the set the Vikings had some miscues on the modified defense, but managed to come away with the first set 25-22.
The second set had Roman come out with revenge in mind as they jumped out to a quick lead thanks to some communication issues and hitting errors from Wood. The Vikings managed to right the ship and continued to push and gained back the lead. Roman called a quick time out, sided out and took a run of its own to get back on top, forcing a Wood time out. The set continued with Roman besting the Vikings with the final score of 25-20.
After another side switch Wood put it back into gear with some stellar defense. One rally at 19-19 last about minute, which saw the Vikings ultimately win the rally with a kill by Jack Waltrich. After that point Wood took control of the final few points to take the set 25-21.
Up 2-1 The Vikings could have put the match to bed, but the Cahillites had other ideas and came out firing. After a few long service runs Roman looked like they had complete control over the set. A missed serve at 24-16 gave the Vikings an opportunity to save themselves and with the set and match. Behind the serves of Dave Lehmann Wood came storming back, with some great blocking, a few fortunate miscues from Roman got the score up to 22. Then Roman called a time out and sided out for the win taking the set 25-22.
The fifth and final set was very familiar to both teams as both previous matches have gone the distance, each time Roman coming out on top. Roman got a quick side out off the first serve, but then had a service error and put the ball into the net. Both teams traded points back and forth for the first few points then Chris Montague put together a 3 point run that separated the Vikings a little, but Roman once again called a time out and sided out right away. Wood then got a kill to side out and put Matt Miller on the line and he put together his own run of 2 points to put the Vikings up 9-4. Another time out from the Cahillites got them the side out they needed. With PCL MVP Pat McCloskey (Roman Catholic) on the line they got another point to make it 6-9. Wood then got a side out and Dave Lehmann took the match home serving 5 straight points that gave Wood the win and kept them alive to take on the Explorers on Monday night at Cairn University 7pm for the PCL Title!
We would like to thank all the parents and fans for coming out to support us! Hope to see everyone on Monday!!!
